A Resource for Authors & Entrepreneurs

Every Author is an Entrepreneur!

Getting Your OWN Website. Step #1.

Although you will be told time and time again that you do not need a website of your own, actually you will be 99% better off if you do have one. It is essential for successful Entrepreneurs.

It will open up doors that you can’t imagine right now, but later down the road, everything from blogging, to building a base of leads to sell to, to reselling products will be a whole lot simpler if you get your own “hosting.”

Getting a hosting account so that you can have you own website is less expensive than you would think.

YOUR WEB HOST

My personal preference for a well-known host is “D9Hosting” where you can pick up a hosted account for just dollars per month. Click on the advert at the bottom of the website to learn more about them. Their facilities and support are excellent and they allow you to build as many “websites” as you like in your account. Use the special discount code on the advertisement below!

Think of the internet as a giant piece of cyberspace. You “rent” a piece of cyber property and build your “home” on it. D9 allow you to build more than one home so this is a real money-saver.

There are other well known names as well such as GoDaddy and Hostgator, among others. Do your research and make your decision after much thought.

FREE WEB HOSTS

You can also go to www.blogger.com and sign up for a free website with Google. It;s very easy to setup and manage, but is not as professional as the facilities offered by a web host. Still, it’s a great place to start. They also give you a free domain name. It will look something like this:

www.your_chosen_name.blogspot.com.

There is also the free www.wordpress.com site, but you are very limited here. You may not sell from this free site.

YOUR DOMAIN NAME

Before signing up with a web host, decide on a unique domain name for your website. It should be fairly broad in scope in case you shift focus. For instance, if you name the site BestGolfTipsOnEarth.com, and then decide to switch to a focus on Gardening, Blogging, or Twitter as your “niche,” then you’ll need a new name! Instead try MyGreatDigitalProducts.com or something like that. Generic or your own name is good. Of course, if your website is laser targeted, then choose a name with the appropriate keywords.

Should you only choose .com and avoid .net, or .me, or .org, etc? Dot Com is, of course, the most popular and easy to remember, but it is not essential. If all your names are taken, you can also add “MY” or “YOUR” to the beginning of the name to make it unique.

I like to use www.mydomain.com to buy my domain names. They are very reasonable as far as pricing goes, but the plus factor is that they are very user-friendly. It is really easy to change the Nameservers in order to point your domain name to your website (or any website, in fact). You do not have to depend on anyone else to do it for you. Big Plus. You can use their search engine to check which names are available and they are very helpful with suggestions.

Incidentally, D9Hosting may offer you a free domain name with your web hosting. Check that out first.
